Lesson 65
My only function is the one God gave me. I want no other and I have no other. The full acceptance of this truth entails two phases; the recognition of salvation as your only function, and the relinquishment of all the other goals you have invented for yourself. Today's idea offers you escape from all your perceived difficulties. It places the key to the door of peace, which you have closed upon yourself, in your own hands. It gives you the answer to all the searching you have done since time began. Be willing to have your illusions of purpose be replaced by truth.

In his comments to the workbook lessons, K. Wapnick said that whenever we are tempted to think that we have functions other than forgiveness, we are involved in defense. We assign importance to many functions: to save the family, save significant others from failures, keep the job, save the world, teach ACIM. Whatever its form, it is not our function, and God did not give it to us. God does not care about specifics and the only function he gave to us is to remember who I am as his Son. Forgiveness makes it possible by removing all sins/guilt and fear and by restoring innocence.
Very often we substitute self-assigned functions for the only true function that was given to us. Indeed, “do not trust your good intentions for they are not good enough.” The text book also reminds us that we need to be completely honest with ourselves:
“Watch carefully and see what it is you are really asking for. Be very honest with yourself in this [i.e., examining the ego’s hidden agenda], for we must hide nothing from each other. “
