Lesson 49

God's Voice speaks to me all through the day. The part of your mind where truth abides is in constant communication with God, whether you are aware of it or not. It is the other part of your mind that functions in the world and obeys the world's laws. It is this part that is constantly distracted, disorganized and highly uncertain. The part that is listening to the Voice for God is calm, always at rest and wholly certain. It is really the only part there is. The other part is a wild illusion, frantic and distraught, but without reality of any kind. Today, do not listen to it. Identify the part of your mind where stillness and peace reign forever. Hear God's Voice calls to you lovingly, reminding you that your Creator has not forgotten His Son. Sink deep into the peace that waits for you beyond the frantic, riotous thoughts and sights and sounds of this insane world. You do not live here. We are trying to reach your real home, the place where you are truly welcome. We are trying to reach God. Be still, and know.

ACIM students often think that this lesson means that they hear the HS telling them wonderful things all the time and very often mistake the ego's voice of specialness for teh Voice of the Holy Spirit or God, as shown in Ch. 24.III.4:1:

"You are NOT special. If you think you are, and would defend your specialness against the truth of what you REALLY are, how can you know the truth? What answer that the Holy Spirit gives can reach you, when it is your specialness to which you listen, and which asks AND ANSWERS? Its tiny answer, soundless in the melody which pours from God to you eternally in loving praise of what you are, is all you listen to. And that vast song of honor and of love for what you are seems silent and unheard before ITS mightiness. You strain your ears to hear ITS soundless voice, and yet the Call of God Himself is soundless to you. “

You CAN defend your specialness, but never will you hear the Voice for God beside it."

K. Wapnick points out in one of his comments to this lesson that "hearing an inner voice they believe belongs to an entity on the other side does not necessarily mean that entity is more advanced or ego-free than they. In the end, there only two tests that can help you to decide whether you are listening to the voice of HS or the Ego. (1) A sense of peace that comes from decisions and (2) how others react to you. The first test, can be deceiving sometimes. For example, I can easily convince myself “I’m at peace” when in fact “I’m in a state of cold war.” But make nor mistakes others can feel true peace in you. As someone told me :“When you are at peace you are warm and fuzzy and playful. When you think and say that you are at peace, but you look like a snow queen, you are in denial. It is a state of cold war.” Very true. People are so hungry for love, they flock to you when you don’t create walls to block Love in you. The instruction in to teachers of God says: “There is a way of living in the world that is not here, although it seems to be. You do not change appearance, though you smile more frequently. Your forehead is serene; your eyes are quiet “(W-p1.155). We are not asked to look different or behave differently from anyone else.
