Food for Thought on New Year's Eve

Let us be still an instant, and forget all things we ever learned, all thoughts we had, and every preconception that we hold of what things mean, and what their purpose is. Let us remember not our own ideas of what the world is for. We do not know. Let every image held of anyone be loosened from our minds and swept away. Be innocent of judgment, unaware of any thoughts of evil or of good that ever crossed your mind of anyone. Now do you know him not. But you ARE free to learn of him, and learn of him anew. Now is he born again to you, and you are born again to him, without the past that sentenced him to die, and you with him. Now is he free to live, as you are free, because an ancient learning passed away, and left a place for truth to be reborn.

"I do not know the thing I am, and therefore do not know what I am doing, where I am, or how to look upon the world and on myself."

Yet in this learning is salvation born. And what you are will TELL you of Itself.

Lesson 66

My happiness and my function are one. God gives me only happiness. He has given my function to me. Therefore my function must be happiness.My happiness and function are one, because God has given me both. There is a very real connection between the function God gave you and your happiness, and they are actually identical. Love cannot give evil, and what is not happiness is evil. God cannot give what He does not have, and He cannot have what He is not. You will listen to madness or hear the truth. On one side stand all illusions. All truth stands on the other. Let us try today to realize that only the truth is true.

Lesson 65

My only function is the one God gave me. I want no other and I have no other. The full acceptance of this truth entails two phases; the recognition of salvation as your only function, and the relinquishment of all the other goals you have invented for yourself. Today's idea offers you escape from all your perceived difficulties. It places the key to the door of peace, which you have closed upon yourself, in your own hands. It gives you the answer to all the searching you have done since time began. Be willing to have your illusions of purpose be replaced by truth.

Lesson 64

Let me not forget my function. Let me not try to substitute mine for God's. Let me forgive and be happy. This is the world it is my function to save. Your function here is to be the light of the world, a function given you by God. Only by fulfilling the function given you by God will you be happy. That is because your function is to be happy by using the means by which happiness becomes inevitable. There is no other way. Every time you choose whether or not to fulfill your function, you are really choosing whether or not to be happy. Why aren't we always choosing this? Let me not wander into temptation.

Lesson 64

Today let us practice with these thoughts:

Let me not forget my function.
Let me not try to substitue mine [thoughts] for God's.
Let me forgive and be happy.

Lesson 63

The light of the world brings peace to every mind through my forgiveness.
I’m the means God has appointed for the salvation of the world.

You are indeed the light of the world with such a function. The Son of God looks to you for his redemption. It is yours to give him, for it belongs to you. Accept no trivial purpose or meaningless desire in its place, or you will forget your function and leave the Son of God in hell.

Trivial purpose and desire expresses some aspect of specialness. Specialness has nothing to do with the behavior but attitude, whereby we use others (people or things) as substitutes for the Love of God or peace of Christ. (K. Wapnick, comments to the workbook)

Today’s lesson is another reminder of all inclusive nature of Jesus’ vision – oneness of Sonship.

“ Yet this a vision in which you must share with everyone you see, for otherwise you will behold it not. To give this gift is how to make it yours. And God ordained, in loving kindness that it be for you (T-31, VII. 8:5)

Lesson 62

Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world.

As K. Wapnick said in his comments to the Workbook: "Forgiveness is the process that does not occure between two people, but in our minds, within the context of our relationships. I don't forgive you, but rather I forgive the projection of my self-concept of guilt I placed on you. That is all I need to forgive. "

"It is your forgiveness that will bring the world of darkness to the light. It is your forgiveness that lets you recognize the light in which you see. Forgiveness is the demonstration that you are the light of the world. Through your forgiveness does the truth about yourself return to your memory. Therefore in your forgiveness lies your salvation. "

Forgiveness is the end of all suffering:

"Do you not then begin to understand what forgiveness will do for you? It will remove all sense of weakness, strain and fatigue from your mind. It will take away all fear and guilt and pain. It will restore the invulnerability and power God gave His Son to your awareness. "

Jesus does not talk about anything external here. The source of all weakness, fear, pain, and guilt is in our mind. Therefore, it must be undone in our minds. The world always seeks to remove negative experiences by fixing the effect of our mind projection whatever form it takes. It never really work because it cannot undo the real sourse of pain in the mind : our decision to separate. This decision can be reversed only internally by ourselves.

Practicing today’s idea "Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world.I would fulfill my function that I may be happy" will help to make the day as happy for you as God wants you to be. And it will help those around you, as well as those who seem to be far away in space and time, to share this happiness with you.

This lesson also reminds us that “salvation is a collaborative venture.”

“Where there is love, your brother MUST give it to you, because of what it IS. But where there is NEED for love, YOU must give it, because of what YOU are. Long ago we said this course will teach you what you are, restoring to you your identity. And we have already learned that this identity is shared. THE MIRACLE BECOMES THE MEANS OF SHARING IT “

“[The Holy Spirit] brings the light of truth into the darkness, and lets it shine on you. And as it shines your brothers see it, and realizing that this light is not what you have made, THEY SEE IN YOU MORE THAN YOU SEE. .. And you will see it with them. Lesson 62

Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world. I would fulfill my function that I may be happy. I would remember this because I want to be happy. It is your forgiveness that will bring the world of darkness to the light. The truth about yourself returns to your memory. Herein lies your salvation. Remember that in every attack you call upon your own weakness, while each time you forgive you call upon the strength of Christ in you. Forgiveness will take away all fear, guilt and pain. It will restore the invulnerability and power God gave His Son to your awareness. It will help those around you, as well as those who seem to be far away in space and time, to share this happiness with you.

Lesson 61

I am the light of the world. This is my only function. That is why I am here. This is the opposite of what ego says you are; a statement of pride, arrogance, self-deception. With Humility, accept your role in salvation and in taking no other role. It is only arrogance that would assert this function cannot be for you, and arrogance is always of the ego. The ego's petty views of what you are and what your purpose is here keeps you asleep. Awaken with an acknowledgment of the truth about yourself. You are the light of the world, the bringer of salvation. He has built His plan for the salvation of His Son on you.

Forgiveness is the reflection of God's Love on earth. It will bring me near enough to Heaven that the Love of God can reach down to me and raise me up to Him. As I begin to see, I recognize His reflection on earth. God's Voice is the only Voice and the only Guide. As I listen to God's Voice, I am sustained by His Love. His Love lights up the world for me to see.

What is there to be saved from except illusions? And what are all illusions except false ideas about myself? My holiness undoes them all by asserting the truth about me. Once I have accepted my holiness, nothing can make me afraid. I cannot suffer any loss or deprivation or pain because of Who I am. My Father supports me, protects, me, and directs me in all things. His care for me is infinite, and is with me forever.

The world I look upon has taken on the light of my forgiveness, and shines forgiveness back at me. i begin to see what my illusions about myself kept hidden. I begin to understand the holiness of all living things, including myself, and their oneness with me.

We've been our own jailors for years. "We've been sitting in the shadow of our thinking minds and wandering why we don't see any sunshine" (Ram Dass). We became accostomed to darkness and fearful of the truth's light.

“Prisoners bound with heavy chains for years, starved and emaciated, weak and exhausted, and with eyes so long cast down in darkness they remember not the light, do not leap up in joy the instant they are made free. It takes a while for them to understand what freedom is. “

“Eyes become used to darkness, and the light of brilliant day seems painful to the eyes grown long accustomed to the dim effects perceived at twilight. And they turn away from sunlight, and the clarity it brings to what they look upon. Dimness seems better; easier to see, and better recognized. Somehow, the vague and more obscure seems EASIER to look upon; LESS painful to the eyes than what is wholly clear and unambiguous. Yet this is NOT what eyes are FOR. And who can say that he PREFERS the darkness, and maintain he WANTS to see? “

1. (26) My attack thoughts are attacking my invulnerability.

And we who are part of Him will yet look past all appearances, and recognize the truth beyond them all. All is one forever. Who I am has been kept for me in the Mind of God, Who has not left His Thoughts. And I, who am among them, am one with them and one with Him.

Review 1 Lesson 55

3. (23) I can escape from this world by giving up attack thoughts.

What I see are signs of disease, disaster and death. The fact that I see such things is proof that I do not understand God. I do not know or remember who I am. I am determined to see the truth in me. I CAN escape this world by giving up attack thoughts. Herein lies my salvation, and nowhere else. Forgiveness allows love to return to my awareness. I am willing to follow the Guide God had given me to find out what my own best interests are, recognizing that I cannot perceive them by myself. Let me open my mind to the world's real purpose by withdrawing the one I have given it, and learning the truth about it.

The mad idea of separation had to be shared before it could form the basis of the world I see. Yet that sharing was a sharing of nothing. Real thoughts share everything with everyone.

The script has been written. Like actors we are reading through our lines, acting out our scenes, going through our dress rehearsals. The play ends, the lights dim, the curtain draws down, the play ends. The reviews are in. The play is a flop. The play is a wild success. It doesn't matter. "There is no "prize" out there. It's not enough to want to succeed, to be ambitious, to be rich, to be powerful. That's just desire. To know what you want, to understand why you are here, and why you are doing it, to dedicate every breathe in your body to give what you are called to do, there is nothing you cannot achieve." Review 1 Lesson 52

• (6) I am upset because I see what is not there. The illusions are upsetting because I have given them reality, and thus regard reality as an illusion.
• (7) I see only the past. I hold the past against everyone and everything, making them my enemies. When I have forgiven myself and remembered Who I am, I will bless everyone and everything I see.
• (8) My mind is preoccupied with past thoughts. Let me learn to give the past away, realizing that in so doing I am giving up nothing.
• (9) I see nothing as it is now. The choice is not whether to see the past or present, the choice is whether to see or not. What I have chosen to see has cost me vision.

Lesson 50

I am sustained by the Love of God. Here is the answer to every problem that will confront you, today and tomorrow and throughout time. In this world, you believe you are sustained by everything but God. Your faith is placed in the most trivial and insane symbols; pills, money, "protective" clothing, influence, prestige, being liked, knowing the "right" people, and an endless list of forms of nothingness that you endow with magical powers. All these things are your replacements for the Love of God. All these things are cherished to ensure a body identification. They are songs of praise to the ego. Do not put your faith in the worthless. It will not sustain you. Only the Love of God will protect you in all circumstances. It will lift you out of every trial, and raise you high above all the perceived dangers of this world into a climate of perfect peace and safety. It will transport you into a state of mind that nothing can threaten, nothing can disturb, and where nothing can intrude upon the eternal calm of the Son of God. Put not your faith in illusions. They will fail you. Put all your faith in the Love of God within you, eternal, changeless and forever unfailing. This is the answer to whatever confronts you today. Through the Love of God within you, you can resolve all seeming difficulties without effort and in sure confidence. Tell yourself this often today. It is a declaration of release from the belief in idols. It is your acknowledgement of the truth about yourself. Let related thoughts come to help you recognize its truth, and allow peace to flow over you like a blanket of protection and surety. Let no idle and foolish thoughts enter to disturb the holy mind of the Son of God. Such is the Kingdom of Heaven. Such is the resting place where your Father has placed you forever.

Lesson 49

God's Voice speaks to me all through the day. The part of your mind where truth abides is in constant communication with God, whether you are aware of it or not. It is the other part of your mind that functions in the world and obeys the world's laws. It is this part that is constantly distracted, disorganized and highly uncertain. The part that is listening to the Voice for God is calm, always at rest and wholly certain. It is really the only part there is. The other part is a wild illusion, frantic and distraught, but without reality of any kind. Today, do not listen to it. Identify the part of your mind where stillness and peace reign forever. Hear God's Voice calls to you lovingly, reminding you that your Creator has not forgotten His Son. Sink deep into the peace that waits for you beyond the frantic, riotous thoughts and sights and sounds of this insane world. You do not live here. We are trying to reach your real home, the place where you are truly welcome. We are trying to reach God. Be still, and know.

Lesson 48

There is nothing to fear. This states a fact, yet it is not a fact to those who believe in illusions. In truth there is nothing to fear. This is difficult to recognize for those who want illusions to be true. The presence of fear is a sure sign that you are trusting in your own strength. The awareness that there is nothing to fear shows that somewhere in your mind, though not necessarily in a place you recognize as yet, you have remembered God, and let His strength take the place of your weakness. The instant you are willing to do this there is indeed nothing to fear.

Lesson 47

God is the strength in which I trust. God is your safety in every circumstance. His Voice speaks for Him in all situations and in every aspect of all situations, telling you exactly what to do to call upon His strength and His protection. There are no exceptions because God has no exceptions. The strength of God in you is successful in all things. Recognizing your own frailty is necessary in correcting your errors. You must gain an awareness that confidence in your real strength is fully justified in every respect and in all circumstances. There is a place in you where there is perfect peace, where nothing is impossible, where the strength of God abides. Peace is your right, because you are giving your trust to the strength of God.

Lesson 46

God is the Love in which I forgive. God does not forgive because He has never condemned. And there must be condemnation before forgiveness is necessary. Forgiveness is the great need of this world, but that is because it is a world of illusions. Those who forgive are thus releasing themselves from illusions, while those who withhold forgiveness are binding themselves to them. As you condemn only yourself, so do you forgive only yourself. Although God does not forgive, His Love is the basis of forgiveness. Fear condemns and love forgives. Forgiveness thus undoes what fear has produced, returning the mind to the awareness of God. For this reason, forgiveness can truly be called salvation. It is the means by which illusions disappear. Search in your mind for those whom you have not forgiven. It does not matter "how much" you have not forgiven them. You have forgiven them entirely or not at all. Mention each one by name, and say: God is the Love in which I forgive you, _________. God is the Love in which I forgive myself.

Lesson 45

God is the Mind with which I think. Your thoughts are in the Mind of God, as you are. They are in your mind as well, where He is. As you are part of His Mind, so are your thoughts part of His Mind. What is thought by the Mind of God is eternal, being part of creation. Deny the world in favor of truth. We cannot fail in doing what He would have us do. Under all the senseless thoughts and mad ideas with which you have cluttered up your mind are the thoughts that you thought with God in the beginning. Only one thing is necessary; approach it as you would an altar dedicated in Heaven to God the Father and to God the Son. For such is the place you are trying to reach. This is no idle game, but an exercise in holiness and an attempt to reach the Kingdom of Heaven. Stand aside from all thoughts that are unworthy of Him Whose host you are. And thank Him for the Thoughts He is thinking with you.

Lesson 44

God is the light in which I see.

"In order to see, you must recognize that light is within, not without. You do not see outside yourself, not the equipment for seeing outside you. .... [the light] that makes seeing possible. It is with you always, making vision possible in every circumstance. " (W-L. 44)

The light the course talks about is not perceptual. It is a symbol representing the HS thought system which shows to us that darkness (the ego and its thought system of guilt, hate, and spcialness and denial of tuth) is not real.

The course says that " you can make darkness and then think you can see in it." The latter makes no sense if you think about it.

"If you can stand aside from the ego by ever so little, you will have no diffculty in recognizing that its opposition [to truth/reality] and its fears are meaningless." (W-L.44)


"Only your [i.e., decision maker] allegiance to it gives the ego any power over you. I have spoke of the ego as if it were a separate thing, acting on its own. this was necessary to persuade you that you cannot dismiss it lightly, and must realize how much of your thinking is ego directed... The ego is nothing more than a part of your belief about yourself ."(T-4. VI.1:2)

"And do not foret that they [the thoughts of the world] cannot hold you to the world uness you give them the power to do so." (W-L44)

"The secret of salvation is but this: that you are doing this unto yourself. No matter what the form of the attack, this is still true. ... whatever seems to be the cause of any pain and suffereing you feel, this is still true. For you would not react at all to figures in a dream you knew that you were dreaming. Let them be as hateful and as vicious as they may, they could have no effect on you unless you failed to recongnize it is your dream" (T-27. VII.10).

Lesson 43

God is my Source. I cannot see apart from Him. Perception is not an attribute of God. His is the realm of knowledge. Yet He has created the Holy Spirit as the Mediator between perception and knowledge. Without this link with God, perception would have replaced knowledge forever in your mind. With this link with God, perception will become so changed and purified that it will lead to knowledge. That is its function as the Holy Spirit sees it. Therefore, that is its function in truth. Healed perception becomes the means by which the Son of God forgives his brother, and thus forgives himself.

Addendum from Elena:

The last statement is a key teaching in the Course:

"To percieve the healing of your brother as the healing of yourself is thus the way to remmeber God. For you forgot your brothers with Him, and God's Answer to your forgetting is but the way to remember" (T-12.II.2:9).

This lesson also teaches you to bring awarness to " mind wandering" and "irrelevant thoughts" that distract you from today's exercise reminding you gently that:

"You are much too tolerant of mind wandering, and are passivly condoning your mind's miscreations (i.e., projections) (T-2.VI. 4:6)

Finally, the lesson urges you to apply today's idea to "situations and events .... which seem to distress you in any way." If we are not peaceful it is our responsibility and no one else's:

I must have decided wrongly, because I'm not at peace
I made the decision myself, but I can also decide otherwise.
I want to decide otherwise because I want to be at peace.
I do not feel guilty, because the Holy Spirit will undo all the conseqneces of my wrong decision if I will let him.

Lesson 42

God is my strength. Vision is His gift. You will see because it is the Will of God. It is His strength, not your own, that gives you power. And it is His gift, rather than your own, that offers vision to you. God is your strength, and what He gives is truly given means that you can receive it any time and anywhere, wherever you are, and in whatever circumstance you find yourself. Your passage through time and space is not at random. You cannot but be in the right place at the right time. Such is the strength of God. Such are His gifts.

Lesson 41

God goes with me wherever I go.

Godgoes with me wherever I go because the memory of God (Holy Spirit) is always in our minds. We never left our home, we are only dreaming that we did.

This lesson urges us to look inward. The ego alwayes wants us to look at external things (e.g., somebody's eyes) to find truth, to aleviate pain and loneliness and to feel good about ourselves.

" Loudly the ego tells you not look inward, for if do your eyes will light on sin, and God will strike you blind. This you believe, a so you don't look. (T-21.IV. 2;3-4).

What if do look inside and find that there is no sin, no guilt, no punishment? You would be free from your Ego. This is the last thing your Ego wants....

Lesson 40

I'm blessed as a Son of God.
I'm happy, peaceful, loving, and contented.

The lesson also reminds us that we don't need anything (i.e., quiet place, closed eyes and etc.) to remember our true identity. Holy Spirit is weaning us from our indentification with external circumstances (e.g., "I need a quiet corner to focus") and rituals. This lesson brings our focus inside to our minds; the source our blessings and at the source of our misery and resistance to accepting who we truly are.

Lesson 40

Assert some of the happy things to which you are entitled, being what you are. I am blessed as a Son of God. I am happy, peaceful, loving and contented. I am calm, quiet, assured and confident.

Lesson 39

My holiness is my salvation. If guilt is hell, what is its opposite? Your salvation is crucial to the salvation of the world. As you apply the exercises to your world, the whole world stands to benefit. Your holiness means the end of guilt, and therefore the end of hell. My unloving thoughts about [_________] are keeping me in hell. My holiness is my salvation.

From Elena:

"Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and fidn all of the barriers within yourself that you have built against it." (T-16.IV.6.1)

It is imperative to search for our unloving thoughts and to see them differently. We can't see anything differently if we push unloving thoughts in the dark corners of own mind or deny them or confuse attack thoughts with loving thoughts (e.g., passionate love/ special relationships). The idea is not to be without these thoughts but to bring our unloving thoughts to Jesus's love so he can reinterpret them.

Lesson 38

There is nothing my holiness cannot do. Your holiness reverses all the laws of the world. Through your holiness the power of God is made manifest and is made available. There is nothing the power of God cannot do. Your holiness, then, can remove all pain, can end all sorrow, and can solve all problems. It can do so in connection with yourself and with anyone else. It is equal in its power to help anyone because it is equal in its power to save anyone.

From Elena:

This lesson is another reminder that " this is a course in cause and not effect." Our holiness can solve all problems because there is only ONE problem: the believe we are separated. Thus, there is only one solution: accepting the Attonment, which denies the reality of guilt because it denies the reality of the separation. At that point (the Holy Instant) the memory of Indentity as God's one Son dawns on our unclouded mind.


This lesson also teaches us to treat others the same way we are treating ourselves. We do not deny there are bodies, but we look at the one or another principle working in our minds and choose to deny their validity. This is the only way to undo sacrifice. I realize that you and I are taking the same journey .... and I realize that the way back home (the way of sanity) is to take your hand:

Lesson 37

My holiness blesses the world. This idea contains the first glimmerings of your true function in the world, or why you are here. Your purpose is to see the world through your own holiness. Thus are you and the world blessed together. No one loses; nothing is taken away from anyone; everyone gains through your holy vision. It signifies the end of sacrifice because it offers everyone his full due. And he is entitled to everything because it is his birthright as a Son of God. Your holiness blesses him by asking nothing of him. Those who see themselves as whole make no demands. Your holiness is the salvation of the world. It lets you teach the world that it is one with you, not by preaching to it, not by telling it anything, but merely by your quiet recognition that in your holiness are all things blessed along with you.
